OpenAI Pivots to Disrupt the Traditional App Store Model
Beyond the debut of agentic assistants and new models, OpenAI’s Dev Day signaled a fundamental shift in software distribution. By transforming ChatGPT into a centralized hub for discovering, launching, and operating third-party tools, the company is positioning its interface to bypass the mobile ecosystem’s gatekeepers.

The strategy centers on integrating external applications directly into the conversational flow. With 1.2 billion weekly users, ChatGPT is evolving into a discovery engine where the AI suggests specific tools based on the user's immediate needs. Once invoked, these applications—ranging from design suites like Figma and Adobe to meeting management utilities—run within interactive panels, eliminating the need to toggle between standalone desktop or mobile environments.
OpenAI is reinforcing this ecosystem through an expanded plugin architecture and a new identity layer. Features like "Sign in with ChatGPT" allow users to carry their AI allowance across third-party platforms, while a new enterprise marketplace hosts over 30 partners, including Salesforce, HubSpot, and CrowdStrike. Developers can now manage their plugin submissions through a streamlined review process that mirrors traditional app store oversight, yet remains tethered to the chat interface.
The most aggressive move involves the rollout of "Dots," autonomous agents designed to navigate the web and execute tasks within their own cloud infrastructure. Rather than forcing users to hunt for software, these agents proactively select and utilize connected apps to complete projects. While OpenAI has yet to unveil a formal billing or revenue-sharing system to rival Apple or Google, the infrastructure for a new distribution channel is firmly in place. By shifting the focus from app icons to agentic intent, the company is effectively rewriting the rules of how software reaches the end user.
