Commonwealth Fusion Systems Secures Massive HTS Tape Order from Fujikura
Commonwealth Fusion Systems has finalized the largest single procurement of high-temperature superconducting tape in history, tapping Japanese manufacturer Fujikura to supply 10,000 kilometers of material. This contract marks a critical pivot from laboratory-scale research to the industrial supply chain required for commercial-grade fusion power plants.
Bob Mumgaard, CEO of Commonwealth Fusion Systems, noted that the move serves as a precursor to the commercial rollout that will follow the successful demonstration of the SPARC fusion machine. The HTS tape is essential for creating the intense magnetic fields required to confine plasma at 100 million degrees Celsius. By utilizing Fujikura’s proprietary IBAD process, these magnets can maintain high current-carrying performance while remaining compact, effectively lowering the capital cost of constructing future fusion reactors.
