Medtronic’s William J. Peine Named 2026 Inventor of the Year

Dr. Peine holds over 130 patents and is credited with designing the surgeon console, hand controllers, and core software that define the Hugo system. By translating surgeon movements into precise instrument control, these innovations allow for complex procedures to be performed through smaller incisions. His work has been central to Medtronic’s goal of broadening access to high-quality surgical care, a commitment that has seen the platform adopted across more than 35 countries.

Henry Hadad, president of the IPOEF, noted that Peine’s contributions exemplify how intellectual property serves as a bridge between abstract research and tangible, life-changing medical tools. The Hugo system, which gained FDA clearance in 2025, integrates with the AI-powered Touch Surgery ecosystem to provide real-time analysis and remote support for operating teams.

Beyond his latest recognition, Peine is a member of Medtronic’s Bakken Society, the company's highest technical honor. He will be formally recognized at the IPO Education Foundation Awards Celebration on December 15 in Washington, D.C., an event dedicated to highlighting the role of patents in driving economic and societal progress.
