PayJoy Receives Big Bank Theory Award for Financial Inclusion
San Francisco-based fintech PayJoy has secured the Serving the Underserved Award at Tearsheet’s Big Bank Theory competition, an accolade recognizing firms that extend essential financial tools to populations historically ignored by traditional banking institutions and mainstream credit providers.

CEO and Co-Founder Doug Ricket framed the recognition as a necessary pushback against predatory lending practices prevalent in these regions. The company maintains a policy of fixed repayment schedules and explicitly avoids compounding interest or late fees. To date, PayJoy has facilitated over $3.5 billion in loans for more than 20 million customers, leveraging proprietary machine learning and anti-fraud AI to manage its secured-credit portfolio.
