American University Partners with DC CAP to Boost Local Student Access

Washington, D.C. students now have a clearer path to higher education as American University joins the DC College Access Program. The collaboration aims to dismantle financial and academic barriers, ensuring local scholars can navigate the transition from application to graduation with minimal debt and robust institutional support.

The partnership integrates American University into a network that provides targeted coaching and financial aid stacking. By combining institutional aid with Pell Grants and D.C. Tuition Assistance Grants, the initiative seeks to make a degree attainable for students who might otherwise be sidelined by costs. Jeremy Lowe, interim vice president of Undergraduate Enrollment Management at American University, described the move as a fulfillment of the institution’s responsibility to its home city, emphasizing that proximity should translate directly into opportunity.

Data from the DC College Access Program underscores the impact of such support systems. Students within the University Partnerships program show a 85% freshman-to-sophomore retention rate, with graduation rates reaching up to 100% in some cohorts—significantly outpacing national averages. Eric Waldo, executive director of DC CAP, noted that for many scholars, the ability to pursue a top-tier education without leaving their home community is a decisive factor in their success. Interested students can begin the eligibility process via an online survey on October 15, with formal applications opening in January 2027.
