Honda and Redwire Partner to Automate Commercial Space Research

As NASA shifts from the International Space Station to commercial platforms, Honda and Redwire are developing a robotic system designed to handle delicate laboratory tasks. By pairing Honda’s multi-fingered robotic hand with Redwire’s STAARK arm, the companies aim to alleviate the workload on smaller, future astronaut crews.

The proposed system targets the high volume of routine laboratory work that currently consumes significant crew time. Honda’s robotic hand features force and tactile sensing, allowing it to manipulate small objects and samples with human-like dexterity. When integrated with the Redwire STAARK arm—a modular system capable of autonomous object tracking and grasping—the technology creates a platform for full experiment workflows, including sample transfer and equipment operation.

This automation is critical for the next generation of space stations, which are being designed for smaller personnel counts and shorter mission durations. Beyond laboratory support, the companies envision the system managing inventory, cargo, and station inspections. Honda and Redwire plan to present this integrated robotics concept to station developers and industry partners at the 2026 International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Türkiye.
