Closing the Gap in Cancer Care Through Specialized Skincare

After years of building luxury beauty brands, CEO Cathy O'Brien faced a breast cancer diagnosis that revealed a glaring void in medical protocol: while oncology teams manage complex treatments, patients are left to guess which products might soothe their burning, compromised skin during chemotherapy and radiation.

Closing the Gap in Cancer Care Through Specialized Skincare

O'Brien partnered with award-winning formulator Kristen Sgarlato to launch Skin Union, a company aimed at moving supportive skincare from an afterthought to a standard component of cancer care. Their approach replaces the trial-and-error process of scouring drugstore aisles with a precise, clinically reviewed protocol. The system consists of three products—The Wash, The Cream, and The Balm—developed specifically for skin undergoing extreme stress, dryness, and barrier disruption.

Every aspect of the collection reflects the realities of treatment. The packaging features easy-open caps to accommodate patients experiencing neuropathy or reduced grip strength, and the formulas avoid common irritants. Dr. Angela J. Lamb, an onco-dermatology specialist and advisor to the brand, notes that standardizing these products removes uncertainty for both physicians and patients. Skin Union is currently undergoing a 28-day home-use study approved by the European Ethical Committee, measuring skin hydration and patient-reported tolerability to bridge the gap between aesthetic beauty and medical necessity.
