Audible adds interactive AI character chats to its audiobooks

Facing mounting pressure from Spotify, Amazon-owned Audible is integrating generative AI into its listening experience. The platform launched three new features this week designed to deepen engagement, including interactive character dialogues, real-time cast guides, and visual aids for non-fiction titles, marking a shift toward more immersive, hands-on audio storytelling.

The company is rolling out these capabilities with a limited slate of titles. The character guide, designed to help listeners track complex ensembles, debuts with the Audible Original production of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, alongside future support for George Orwell’s 1984 and Benjamin Percy’s Exoplanet. This tool provides spoiler-free character cards and real-time identification of speakers, with plans to introduce AI-driven Q&A sessions that allow users to query the story as it unfolds.

Interactive storytelling goes further by using generative AI to place the listener within the narrative. In the new Dracula and Exoplanet productions, listeners can converse with specific characters—such as Dracula’s servant, Renfield—who assign roles and objectives before responding to user input in real time. Audible claims these interactions remain tethered to the original source material through close collaboration with creators. Meanwhile, a visual feature providing supplemental imagery and context is launching with Sheehan Quirke’s The Cultural Tutor, aimed at clarifying complex subjects like art and geography. These technical investments arrive as the U.S. audiobook market continues its expansion, with revenue climbing to $2.43 billion in 2025.
