Soybean Futures Hit Record Open Interest at CME Group

Traders piled into soybean futures throughout September, pushing open interest to an unprecedented 1,118,872 contracts. The surge eclipses the previous high set in April, signaling an aggressive scramble to hedge against supply chain disruptions and shifting weather patterns that are currently roiling the global agricultural landscape.

Soybean Futures Hit Record Open Interest at CME Group

The record-breaking volume arrives as the market grapples with a volatile intersection of geopolitical trade tensions and climate-driven uncertainty. John Ricci, Global Head of Agricultural Products at CME Group, noted that market participants are responding to a rare convergence of risks: rain-delayed U.S. harvests, shifting trade demands, and the looming threat of a Super El Niño event on Brazilian planting yields. This combination of factors has forced a record number of participants to seek shelter in derivatives, driving activity to new highs. This September milestone follows a robust first half of 2026 for the exchange’s agricultural division, during which average daily volume hit 2 million contracts and total open interest climbed to 10.7 million. As weather models and trade policies remain fluid, the uptick in contract volume highlights the critical role of these tools in managing exposure to global supply fluctuations.
