Fervo Energy Launches Cape Station Geothermal Plant

Twenty-three months after breaking ground, Fervo Energy began delivering electricity from its Cape Station power plant to the grid on September 30. This achievement marks the first time an enhanced geothermal project has hit a commercial milestone, with the initial block now operational a day ahead of schedule.

The site currently contributes roughly 33 megawatts to the grid, but the company envisions a total capacity of 100 megawatts for this project alone. Looking further ahead, Fervo executives believe the location holds the potential to generate up to 4 gigawatts. CEO Tim Latimer noted that the accelerated construction timeline sets a new industry standard, with internal targets aiming to shrink future development cycles to 18 months.

This rapid deployment capability targets the surging energy demands of data center operators and hyperscalers. By adopting a phased development model, Fervo allows utility partners such as Google and Southern California Edison to scale their power consumption alongside infrastructure growth. Unlike traditional geothermal operations that rely on shallow heat sources, the startup leverages advanced drilling techniques borrowed from the oil and gas industry to access deeper, hotter rock formations.

Founded in 2017, the company has secured over $1.3 billion in venture backing from firms including Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Capricorn Investment Group. This success follows a broader push to commercialize enhanced geothermal systems, positioning the company as a key player in the transition toward reliable, carbon-free baseload power.
