True Botanicals Targets Skin Barrier with Waterless Spirulina Cleanser

Mill Valley-based True Botanicals is challenging the industry-standard quest for a squeaky-clean finish with its new Spirulina Cleansing Powder. By prioritizing the skin barrier over aggressive degreasing, the brand aims to replace stripping surfactants with a mineral-rich, water-activated formula designed to boost hydration and resilience from the first wash.

The product centers on a nutrient-dense blue powder containing two forms of Spirulina Maxima, including Algaktiv GenoFix Day sourced from Canary Islands volcanic waters. This waterless format remains shelf-stable until combined with water, at which point it transforms into a lather infused with skin-identical humectants and colloidal oatmeal. The design choice eliminates unnecessary water weight while concentrating active ingredients intended to neutralize free radicals.

Founder Hillary Peterson noted that the industry has long conditioned consumers to misinterpret tightness as an indicator of effectiveness. According to clinical data, the powder improves skin hydration by up to 49% immediately after use. Studies further indicated that all participants reported decreased oiliness after four weeks of consistent use, alongside visible improvements in radiance and tone. The vegan, fragrance-free formula is available starting October 1, 2026, for $48, carrying certifications from MADE SAFE and Sorette.
