Houston’s Creative Blinds Targets Corded Window Hazards

While 84 percent of parents recognize that window cords pose a strangulation risk to children, fewer than one-third have acted to remove them from their homes. This month, Houston-based Creative Blinds is addressing the gap by offering a 20 percent discount on cordless replacements during National Window Covering Safety Month.

Houston’s Creative Blinds Targets Corded Window Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission classifies corded window coverings as a significant threat, noting that injuries occur rapidly even under adult supervision. Experts advise that any blinds manufactured before November 2000 are particularly dangerous due to internal cords that can form fatal loops. To mitigate these risks, the industry now promotes the “Best for Kids” certification, which identifies products with inaccessible cords.

As Creative Blinds marks its 50th year in business, second-generation owner Erika Palmer Mandel is shifting the company focus toward home safety. She notes that residents often stop perceiving long-installed blinds as potential hazards, allowing them to blend into the background of a room. To support the transition, the company is inviting Houston-area homeowners to bring photos of their current treatments to local showrooms for professional assessment. Families are encouraged to prioritize inspections in bedrooms, playrooms, and any areas near cribs or climbable furniture.
