The project involves demolishing the existing 482-meter structure and replacing it with a more compact 305-meter pier. Designed to accommodate four vessels simultaneously, the new installation integrates essential utility systems, including upgraded substations, water and wastewater connections, and a compressed air network. Beyond the pier itself, the scope includes dredging, site improvements, and the construction of 290 feet of new bulkhead to ensure long-term stability at the active Navy installation.

Skanska Secures $271 Million Contract for Rhode Island Naval Pier
A $271 million agreement between Skanska and NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic marks the start of a major infrastructure overhaul at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island. The Swedish construction firm will dismantle the aging Pier 1 to make way for a modern facility tailored for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Offshore Patrol Cutters.

Work is already underway at the Newport site, with the full scope of construction expected to conclude by March 2030. Skanska plans to incorporate the contract value, roughly SEK 2.5 billion, into its third-quarter order bookings for 2026.
