The 2026 Death & Inheritance Report, which surveyed 5,000 U.S. adults, suggests that the primary barrier to estate planning is not the morbid nature of the topic, but the desire to protect festive moods. While 16% of respondents use Christmas as a trigger for these discussions, 37% admit they actively avoid the holiday for such talks, marking it as the most shunned occasion in all 50 states.
Social awkwardness acts as a significant deterrent. Roughly 63% of Americans find it uncomfortable to bring up inheritance at a family birthday, ranking it higher in difficulty than Thanksgiving dinner or major sporting events. In contrast, only 41% report similar anxiety at a funeral, and an ordinary phone call remains the least intimidating setting. Cody Barbo, co-founder and CEO of Trust & Will, notes that the reluctance stems from a desire to maintain joy, suggesting that families find more success by abandoning the search for a 'perfect' time and opting for an ordinary Tuesday instead.
