Bernie Sanders Assails Trump-Backed Voucher Plan as Educational Apartheid

Senator Bernie Sanders has leveled sharp criticism at a nationwide private school voucher initiative, claiming the program is designed to cement a two-tier education system. The proposal, embedded within the Republican-led One Big Beautiful Bill Act, risks diverting $51 billion in annual taxpayer funds toward private institutions.

Bernie Sanders Assails Trump-Backed Voucher Plan as Educational Apartheid

The report from the Vermont independent highlights a stark fiscal disparity, noting that the $51 billion price tag exceeds the combined federal funding for Title I-A programs for low-income students and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Critics argue these vouchers function as a wealth transfer rather than a lifeline, effectively subsidizing tuition for families who already afford private schooling while leaving public institutions further under-resourced.

A central concern raised by the documentation is the lack of federal oversight, which allows private schools to curate their student bodies. The report finds that 48% of analyzed private institutions explicitly state they do not provide the same legal protections or services for students with disabilities that are mandated in public classrooms. By siphoning resources away from public education without imposing reciprocal standards for admissions or accountability, Sanders warns the policy will exacerbate existing structural inequalities. He characterized the move as a calculated effort by billionaire donors to prioritize exclusive, well-funded enclaves over the needs of working-class and low-income students.
