Uber Settles Sexual Assault Lawsuit Days After Jury Selection

A jury was already seated in an Austin courtroom when Uber Technologies opted to settle a high-stakes sexual assault lawsuit. The move, which occurred less than 48 hours before opening statements were set to begin, marks another chapter in the massive federal litigation involving thousands of similar passenger claims.

Uber Settles Sexual Assault Lawsuit Days After Jury Selection

The case, Jane Doe QLF 001 v. Uber Technologies, Inc., centered on a 2020 incident involving driver Victor Huynh Le, who was later convicted and sentenced to 11 years in prison. During the jury selection process in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, the company took the unusual step of stipulating that the assault had indeed occurred, effectively narrowing the scope of the trial before it could reach the presentation of evidence.

While the financial terms of the settlement remain confidential, the decision serves as the third federal bellwether case to be resolved under the oversight of U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer. Plaintiffs' co-lead counsel, including Rachel Abrams, Sarah London, and Roopal Luhana, characterized the settlement as a necessary step toward accountability. They noted that the company has faced two prior federal verdicts in Arizona and North Carolina where juries held the platform responsible for driver misconduct. With roughly 5,000 similar cases pending in the multi-district litigation, survivors are now calling for a global resolution rather than individual settlements.
