The renovation project, executed by North River Construction, replaces traditional layouts with an open-concept design that integrates teller services and member support. To bolster accessibility, the branch now features two drive-thru YourTeller interactive machines and two additional walk-up units. Beyond structural upgrades, the site serves as a public tribute to the region's industrial past through a new historical exhibit curated with The Mariners' Museum and Park. This display includes artifacts, shipyard tools, and paintings by American Realist Thomas C. Skinner, accompanied by a $25,000 donation from the credit union to the museum.

BayPort Credit Union Reopens Historic Newport News Branch
Nearly a century after its founding by shipyard workers, BayPort Credit Union has unveiled a modernized home for its original branch on Huntington Avenue. The renovation of the 37th Street site preserves a critical financial anchor in downtown Newport News, serving as both a local service hub and a maritime museum.
Since its inception in 1928, BayPort has maintained deep ties to the local shipbuilding workforce, moving its operations to the current Huntington Avenue location in 1952. President and CEO Jim Mears noted that the reopening functions as a celebration of the institution's roots rather than a simple facility update. As the only financial institution operating in downtown Newport News, the credit union continues to serve a membership base that has grown to over 156,000 individuals, managing $2.7 billion in assets across its 31 Virginia locations.
