Nearly two decades after its founding, Change.org is launching a $100 million initiative to overhaul its platform, aiming to bridge the gap between local grassroots concerns and government action. CEO Ben Rattray argues that the primary threat to democracy is not partisan friction, but a pervasive sense of powerlessness among the electorate. By rebuilding the infrastructure from the ground up, the organization intends to transition from a simple petition site into a more active tool for civic engagement. Central to this strategy is the integration of artificial intelligence designed to guide users through the mechanics of effective campaigning.

Early testing suggests these technical upgrades are already yielding tangible results. New automated features now assist in outreach to elected officials for petitions exceeding 100 local signatures, a process that has reportedly doubled response rates from representatives. With 59% of petitions now focused on local issues and 62% remaining nonpartisan, the platform is betting that localized digital advocacy can restore trust in the democratic process.
