The construction initiative represents a significant piece of Southwire’s broader $2 billion modernization strategy. Gray’s scope of work involves clearing 40,000 square feet of existing structures to make room for a new facility, headlined by a six-story extrusion tower required for copper wire production. The site is being built to LEED Silver standards, incorporating a rainwater collection system for gray water reuse and infrastructure readiness for future solar power integration.

Southwire Breaks Ground on 380,000-Square-Foot Starkville Expansion
A surge in data center construction and national electrification efforts has prompted Southwire to break ground on a massive expansion of its Starkville, Mississippi, manufacturing campus. The project, managed by Gray, will add 380,000 square feet of production space and create approximately 130 new local jobs by 2028.

Rebekah Gray, president and CEO of Gray Construction, emphasized the strategic necessity of the project, noting that the rapid scaling of data centers places immense pressure on the underlying power infrastructure Southwire manufactures. During the peak of the construction phase, the site will host nearly 250 workers. Notably, the manufacturing campus will maintain its current production levels throughout the entire build process, ensuring that the company continues to meet supply demands for its customers while the expansion moves toward its projected full-capacity launch in 2028.
