OpenCape, which manages over 500 route miles of fiber connecting Cape Cod to Boston and Providence, provides the foundational transport layer for this rollout. The network utilizes carrier-grade optical technology capable of delivering 800 Gbps per wavelength, with a roadmap to scale reaching 1.65 Tbps. By plugging into this open-access backbone, Gateway Fiber aims to address long-standing connectivity gaps for both year-round residents and seasonal homeowners.

Gateway Fiber Taps OpenCape Backbone for Cape Cod Expansion
Gateway Fiber is moving into Falmouth, Barnstable, and Yarmouth, leveraging OpenCape’s existing fiber-optic infrastructure to deliver high-speed residential internet. This partnership marks a significant integration of regional carrier-grade technology to support a new wave of broadband access across Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts.

Since its founding in 2007, OpenCape has focused on mitigating the region's historical bandwidth limitations. For Gateway Fiber CEO Chris Surdo, the collaboration offers a path to integrate into local communities with a reliable service model. OpenCape CEO Pete Saladino noted that the infrastructure serves as a catalyst for local economic development, providing the necessary capacity for high-demand research institutions and businesses to compete on a global scale.
