Turnitin Expands AI Writing Detection to Dutch, German, and Turkish

Educators in the Netherlands, Germany, and Turkey now have access to automated AI detection tools for student submissions. Oakland-based Turnitin announced the expansion on October 6, 2026, aiming to provide instructors with clearer insights into how generative AI impacts student writing and academic integrity in non-English classrooms.

The new language capabilities integrate directly into Turnitin Originality and iThenticate 2.0. By flagging content likely generated by large language models, the company intends to move beyond simple surveillance toward fostering dialogue about responsible technology use. James Thorley, vice president of EMEA and APAC, emphasized that these tools are designed to help teachers recognize deviations in writing styles rather than serve as a replacement for human assessment.

This update follows the company’s existing support for English, Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic. The system provides an AI-generated content percentage alongside reports that fold into established learning management systems. These insights are intended to assist faculty in navigating the evolving educational landscape, where student reliance on AI tools is becoming increasingly common. The company currently serves over 16,000 institutions across 185 countries, positioning its software as a standard component for verifying original thought in modern academic environments.
