The new facility triples the site’s existing testing footprint, integrating three biosafety cabinets and a centralized incubator system to streamline workflows. A centerpiece of the upgrade is a dedicated Grade C sterility testing suite housing a Grade A isolator. This configuration allows for concurrent processing of multiple samples using both open and closed filtration methods, a significant leap from the site’s previous non-classified testing areas. Built-in pass-throughs now link the manufacturing floor directly to the lab, mitigating contamination risks.

Piramal Pharma Expands Lexington Facility with New Microbiology Lab
Piramal Pharma Solutions has opened a high-capacity microbiology laboratory at its sterile injectable site in Lexington, Kentucky, marking a major milestone in the company’s $85 million facility expansion. The laboratory, which began GMP operations in September, is designed to cut testing times by half and double the site's sterility capacity.

Nathan Richardson, Vice President and Site Head at the Lexington facility, noted that the investment targets faster batch releases and improved reliability for clients transitioning products from clinical trials to commercial-scale production. Beyond current efficiencies, the infrastructure prepares the site for increased demand in small molecule, bioconjugate, and peptide manufacturing. While the laboratory is now active, the broader expansion at the Lexington campus—including commercial-scale fill and finish capabilities—remains on track for a 2027 launch.
