The consortium seeks to transform CMC knowledge into reusable digital assets, addressing the persistent bottleneck where critical supply chain data remains trapped in manual formats. By integrating existing guidelines and developing new code-based workflows, the group intends to provide a structured data foundation essential for AI implementation. Members include Rockwell Automation, Flagship’s Pioneering Medicines, Stellix, ZS Associates, and QbDVision.

Biopharma Giants Form Consortium to Digitize Drug Manufacturing
Pharmaceutical development remains anchored to manual, document-based workflows, but a new industry alliance aims to dismantle that legacy. The Digital CMC Consortium, featuring Novartis, Takeda, and Thermo Fisher, officially launched today to replace static PDF-based reporting with interoperable digital standards for chemistry, manufacturing, and controls.

Consortium Chairman Mike Stapleton noted that while the industry successfully digitized discovery and clinical trials, the CMC phase has lagged. The group’s immediate priority is facilitating frictionless technology transfer between sponsors and contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs). As the initiative scales, it plans to expand into digital twins and automated content authoring, providing a unified industry forum for engaging with global health authorities. Achim Frauenschuh of Novartis, the consortium’s co-chair, emphasized that the shift allows companies to bypass duplicative efforts and move toward standardized templates that deliver measurable results.
