SHARx Recruits Sports Stars to Challenge High Drug Prices

Professional golfer Gary Hallberg and former NFL quarterback Brock Osweiler are among the high-profile figures joining Rising Tides, a new initiative from St. Louis-based SHARx. The program aims to leverage the influence of athletes and broadcasters to combat systemic prescription price gouging and advocate for more affordable access.

CEO Corey Durbin describes the development of the initiative as a organic process born from personal relationships rather than traditional marketing. By tapping into networks of athletes like Sophie Cunningham and former U.S. congressman Heath Shuler, Durbin hopes to shift public sentiment regarding the pharmaceutical supply chain. These ambassadors, selected for their credibility and shared commitment to accountability, are using their platforms to question why U.S. patients often pay significantly more for medication than their international counterparts.

At the core of the movement is a response to data from the RAND Corporation, which indicates that American consumers pay 422% more for brand-name drugs than those in other countries. The Rising Tides podcast serves as the primary forum for this advocacy, allowing ambassadors to raise fundamental questions about medication costs and accessibility. Rather than acting as pharmaceutical experts, these figures are designed to act as proxies for the average patient, highlighting the financial barriers faced by families and employers.

SHARx intends to expand the program beyond the sports world, seeking participants with academic and enterprise expertise. The company utilizes supply-chain management and procurement strategies to bypass traditional, high-cost medication pathways. By pairing this logistical work with the reach of their ambassador network, SHARx aims to transition stakeholders from awareness of the pricing crisis to direct action within their own employer-sponsored health plans.
