Six young activists from North America and Mexico are set to receive the 2026 Brower Youth Awards, an honor recognizing those driving tangible change in conservation, energy, and policy. The recipients, ranging from ages 19 to 21, will be celebrated on October 19 in Berkeley, California.

Earth Island Institute Names Six Youth Environmental Leaders for 2026

The Earth Island Institute selected this year’s cohort for their diverse approaches to environmental advocacy. Esther Bonney of Maryland leads the nonprofit Nurture Natives, which has restored over 420 acres of habitat, while Kaitlyn Culbert of New Jersey has engaged state and federal legislators to restrict neonicotinoids and protect pollinators. In California, Garrett Ordonez founded Hike for Habitats, mobilizing 600 volunteers for post-wildfire recovery efforts.

International and educational efforts also defined the 2026 class. Maritza Sanchez of Mexico is developing microbial fuel cells designed to convert wastewater into electricity for energy-poor households. Ojas Sanghi of Arizona spearheaded the Tucson Unified School District’s adoption of a comprehensive climate action resolution, and Renee Zhao of British Columbia reached over 300,000 students through her curriculum development for the Canadian Youth Climate Action Team.

Sumona Majumdar, CEO of Earth Island Institute, noted that these projects demonstrate the capacity of youth to create practical solutions for a healthy planet. The winners will receive leadership training and networking support during the 27th annual ceremony, continuing a tradition that has recognized more than 160 environmental changemakers since 2000.
