REVA Medical Reports Positive Clinical Data for MOTIV Scaffold at VIVA26

A 72-year-old patient suffering from chronic limb-threatening ischemia underwent a successful below-the-knee revascularization procedure in Las Vegas this week, marking a high-profile demonstration for REVA Medical’s MOTIV bioresorbable scaffold. The live procedure coincided with new trial data showing the device outperforms standard balloon angioplasty in complex cases.

Professor Andrej Schmidt of University Hospital Leipzig conducted the procedure, utilizing two MOTIV sirolimus-eluting scaffolds to treat a Rutherford Category 5 patient presenting with a non-healing ulcer. The surgery resulted in successful vessel revascularization and favorable angiographic outcomes, providing a practical showcase for the technology during the VIVA26 conference.

Simultaneously, Dr. Ehrin Armstrong of HCA HealthOne Swedish Medical Center unveiled results from a pivotal trial comparing the MOTIV scaffold against traditional balloon angioplasty in 292 patients. The data indicated that the scaffold consistently achieved superior rates of limb salvage and primary patency at both six and 12 months. In the more severe Rutherford 5 cohort, 65.7% of patients treated with the MOTIV device hit these efficacy endpoints at one year, compared to 46.2% for those receiving standard angioplasty. REVA Medical CEO Jeffrey Anderson noted that these findings highlight the scaffold's potential to address complex arterial disease without the need for a permanent implant.
