ATTR-CM occurs when the TTR protein becomes unstable and accumulates in the heart, causing the organ to stiffen and struggle to pump blood. Because the condition’s symptoms—such as fatigue and shortness of breath—often mimic common heart ailments or age-related decline, patients frequently face significant delays in receiving an accurate diagnosis. Research indicates that approximately 1 in 25 Black Americans carries a genetic variant associated with the disease, making early detection critical for long-term health outcomes.

BridgeBio Launches Awareness Campaign for Underdiagnosed Heart Condition
BridgeBio Pharma is launching a nationwide educational initiative to address transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy, a frequently overlooked cause of heart failure. The campaign, which debuts October 6 with a YouTube premiere, aims to bridge the diagnostic gap for a disease that disproportionately affects Black Americans.

The initiative centers on a candid conversation moderated by broadcaster Sway Calloway, featuring sports executive Howard "H" White, who is living with the condition. The panel includes medical experts and cultural advocates, including Doug E. Fresh and Dr. Olajide Williams of Hip Hop Public Health, who emphasize the need for culturally relevant health communication. Beyond the digital premiere, the program will host educational screenings at 40 locations across the country, supported by organizations such as the Association of Black Cardiologists and the National Medical Association. These efforts are scheduled to culminate ahead of World Amyloidosis Day on October 26, with the goal of empowering patients to advocate for their health before the disease progresses.
