Midwestern Shoppers Prioritize Value for Halloween 2026

With one in four Midwesterners planning to tighten their holiday budgets this year, household spending on Halloween is shifting toward frugality. A new survey of 1,000 residents across six states reveals that while traditions like home decorating and pet costumes remain steady, shoppers are actively hunting for lower prices.

Midwestern Shoppers Prioritize Value for Halloween 2026

The data, collected by Meijer and The Harris Poll, shows that 70% of respondents intend to decorate their homes, while 33% plan to dress up their pets. Despite the economic caution, the appetite for sweets persists; 91% of those surveyed intend to buy candy, with chocolate remaining the preferred choice for 78% of shoppers. To accommodate these spending habits, Meijer has priced the majority of its decor items at $10 or less, with most costumes capped at $25.

Beyond the festivities, practical habits continue to define the holiday. Nearly half of the participants opt for quick, convenient meals like pizza before heading out for trick-or-treating. Don Sanderson, chief merchandising and marketing officer at Meijer, stated that the company aims to support these family traditions by maintaining affordability. The retailer is currently positioning staple items like Midwest-grown pumpkins at $4.99 and specific candy varieties at discounted rates to align with the regional demand for value-driven shopping.
