Ring Unveils Hand-Cranked Smart Lock to Solve Battery Anxiety

Locked out because of a dead battery? Ring is betting its new smart lock can solve that common frustration with a manual power dial. By simply turning a small crank on the face of the device, users can generate enough temporary energy to unlock their door without needing a physical key.

Ring Unveils Hand-Cranked Smart Lock to Solve Battery Anxiety

The device, which fits a standard single-cylinder deadbolt, aims to eliminate the fear of being stranded. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff developed the concept after worrying about smart lock reliability at his own vacation property. While the internal battery is designed to last a year and provides mobile alerts via the Ring app, the mechanical backup serves as a safety net for those rare moments when power fails.

Entry options include a fingerprint reader, a backlit touchscreen keypad, voice commands through Alexa, and the Ring app. Beyond the lock, the company plans to open its software to third-party developers, potentially allowing Airbnb hosts to integrate specialized access management tools. The hardware is slated for a U.S. release in the first quarter of 2027, pending FCC authorization, and will ship in black, silver, and brass finishes. Alongside the lock, Ring is expanding its lineup with four new 4K cameras, including updated Outdoor, Spotlight, and Floodlight models.
