Prince Harry and Dr. Mary-Frances O'Connor Partner for Grief MasterClass

Ahead of World Mental Health Day, Prince Harry and neuroscientist Dr. Mary-Frances O'Connor have launched a MasterClass titled Redefining Grief. The course combines personal reflection with physiological research to help individuals navigate loss, offering practical tools to transform profound pain into long-term resilience and a renewed sense of identity.

The curriculum spans five modules, moving from the biological reality of how grief impacts the brain to actionable strategies for recovery. Dr. O'Connor, who wrote The Grieving Brain, explains that grief is rarely a linear process, emphasizing that physiological responses to loss are common and manageable. Prince Harry contributes his own experiences, discussing his history of suppressing emotion during his youth and his subsequent journey toward finding purpose.

The course introduces techniques such as breathwork and muscle relaxation to assist members during acute periods of distress. Rather than suggesting a return to a pre-loss self, the instructors encourage students to use their experiences as a foundation for building a new identity. This perspective is reinforced by the platform’s support for Scotty’s Little Soldiers and Comfort Zone Camp, two organizations that facilitate peer support for grieving youth.

"Grief isn't something you move past—it's something you move through," Dr. O'Connor noted. The collaboration aims to provide a structured approach to what is often an isolating experience, focusing on integration rather than avoidance.
