Nuevocor Launches Human Trials for LMNA Dilated Cardiomyopathy Therapy

The first patient has received a dose of NVC-001 in the SUNBEAM-LMNA clinical trial, marking a pivotal shift in testing gene therapies for the aggressive heart condition. Alongside the trial launch, the FDA granted the treatment Fast Track designation to accelerate development for a disease that currently lacks approved therapies.

Nuevocor Launches Human Trials for LMNA Dilated Cardiomyopathy Therapy

LMNA dilated cardiomyopathy affects approximately 100,000 people across the United States and Europe. The condition stems from mutations in the LMNA gene, leaving the nucleus unable to withstand the mechanical stress of cardiac contractions. This leads to rapid progression toward end-stage heart failure and a high risk of sudden cardiac death. Currently, heart transplantation remains the only standard option for patients with advanced disease.

NVC-001 acts as a one-time AAV9-based gene therapy designed to restore nuclear integrity. The Phase 1/2 SUNBEAM-LMNA study is an open-label, multi-center trial evaluating the safety and tolerability of three ascending doses of the therapy. According to Dr. Evan Kransdorf of the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the effort represents a significant step in addressing conditions previously considered untreatable. By securing FDA Fast Track status, Nuevocor gains access to more frequent regulatory interactions and eligibility for rolling reviews, potentially shortening the timeline to bring this mechanobiology-targeted approach to clinical practice.
