Metacon secures EU funding for Crete hydrogen pilot project

With a grant of 241,920 euros, Swedish developer Metacon is set to launch the BIOH2VAP initiative in Ierapetra, Crete. The project centers on a pilot plant designed to transform agricultural and livestock biogas into high-purity hydrogen, testing the commercial viability of the company’s proprietary reforming technology in an industrial setting.

The 36-month venture, backed by the European Union’s Competitiveness Programme, carries a total project budget of approximately 1.69 million euros, with Metacon’s specific portion valued at 302,400 euros. By integrating Pressure Swing Adsorption with catalytic steam reforming, the facility will convert locally sourced biomethane into renewable hydrogen, bypassing the need for traditional grid connections.

For Metacon, this installation serves as a critical testing ground for its HIWAR catalytic reactor systems. CEO Christer Wikner noted that the site provides an industrial platform to refine operational efficiency and strengthen the business case for circular hydrogen production. Beyond energy generation, the project includes an assessment of residue-based soil conditioners, aiming to demonstrate how existing biogas infrastructure can be repurposed to support localized renewable energy markets internationally.
