Amazon pivots to Android with new Alexa-branded tablet lineup

Amazon is breaking from its Fire OS roots, unveiling a trio of tablets that run on Android and feature native Google Play Store access. The new Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, 11, and 8 models represent a distinct shift in strategy, moving away from the company's proprietary walled garden to capture a broader market.

Amazon pivots to Android with new Alexa-branded tablet lineup

The flagship Alexa Tablet 12 Pro features a 12-inch, 120Hz display with an optional Nanomatte anti-glare finish. Amazon claims this model delivers a significant leap in performance, offering triple the processing power and nine times the graphical capabilities of previous generations. Designed to function as a workstation, it supports a dedicated Pro Pen and keyboard, catering to users who need to handle multi-window multitasking or 4K streaming.

Beyond the hardware, the integration of Alexa+ introduces contextual "On-Screen Intelligence," allowing the assistant to analyze active displays to answer user queries. The 11-inch model focuses on media consumption with a 2.5K display and 90Hz refresh rate, while the 8.7-inch version prioritizes portability for mobile users. All devices include a refined Kindle reading mode that minimizes distractions and optimizes battery longevity. Starting October 14, 2026, the lineup will be available in North America, followed by a European launch on October 19. Alongside these devices, Amazon is refreshing its kids' tablet segment with specialized protective cases and long-term content bundles.
