Army Taps webAI for $14.5M Tactical Intelligence Project

The U.S. Army has awarded webAI Public Sector a $14.5 million contract to deploy resilient artificial intelligence directly onto frontline devices. Under the Project ARIA initiative, the technology aims to ensure soldiers maintain critical intelligence capabilities even when operating in environments where cloud access is disrupted or entirely unavailable.

The firm-fixed-price contract, issued by the Army Contracting Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground, tasks the company with bypassing traditional cloud-dependent architectures. By utilizing webAI’s Intelligence Delivery Network, the software runs locally on existing military hardware—including handhelds, laptops, and mounted compute systems—allowing units to function autonomously in contested or remote theaters.

This approach shifts AI from centralized data centers to the tactical edge, where connectivity is often limited or denied. Dr. Jason Rathje, President of webAI Public Sector, emphasized that mission success relies on maintaining intelligence parity even when communications are jammed. The system functions by granting each node full local decision authority, with devices securely syncing data and models only when network links become available.

Col. John Oliver, representing the Army Initiatives Group, noted that the Project ARIA program prioritizes speed to field practical technology within months rather than years. By integrating with nontraditional defense partners, the Army seeks to move beyond laboratory-confined AI, ensuring that soldiers possess collaborative, device-native intelligence that remains functional regardless of external signal strength.
