Mote Marine Laboratory Unveils Sarasota Science Aquarium

Spanning 12 acres at Nathan Benderson Park, the new Mote Science Education Aquarium (SEA) opened its doors to the public this October. The 146,000-square-foot facility serves a dual purpose: functioning as a high-tech hub for marine research and providing STEM-focused educational resources for over 70,000 regional students annually.

The campus integrates advanced teaching laboratories dedicated to biomedical science, microbiology, and ocean engineering. To ensure the durability of the facility's extensive holding tanks and below-grade structures, architects Cambridge Seven and TVS Design specified Penetron crystalline waterproofing technology. The ready-mix concrete supplier, Argos, integrated PENETRON ADMIX SB directly into the mix to guard against the corrosive effects of waterborne chlorides common in marine environments.

By minimizing concrete permeability, this chemical treatment prevents the leaching of soluble materials and protects the internal reinforcing steel from premature deterioration. Beyond the main concrete structures, the construction team utilized PENEBAR SW-55 swellable waterstop strips to create permanent seals at all construction joints. According to Darrin Vogeli, account manager for Penetron USA, these measures are designed to significantly extend the service life of the aquarium’s infrastructure compared to conventional, untreated concrete. The facility now stands as a central venue for both public engagement and critical marine conservation efforts.
