General Fusion Stock Rallies After Reaching Plasma Temperature Goal

Shares of General Fusion climbed 13% to $8.62 on Thursday following the company's announcement of a technical breakthrough in its commercial fusion energy program. The firm successfully pushed electron temperatures past 12 million degrees Celsius, a critical first step toward its long-term goal of grid-scale clean power.

General Fusion Stock Rallies After Reaching Plasma Temperature Goal

The company utilized its Magnetized Target Fusion approach to hit the 12 million degree mark, or more than one kiloelectron volt. This achievement serves as the first of three technical hurdles required to reach net fusion energy. Subsequent phases involve heating electrons to 10 kiloelectron volts and eventually sustaining a reaction within superheated plasma, with a targeted commercial launch date of 2035.

Working alongside the UK Atomic Energy Authority, researchers verified the data using Thomson scattering, a standard diagnostic technique for plasma physics. The findings have been submitted for peer review and published in two technical papers now available on the company's website. Chief Executive Greg Twinney noted that the success validates the firm's roadmap for its LM26 project, providing momentum for the transition toward the Lawson criterion and final commercial scalability.
