Nootropics Depot Shifts Strategy with Whole-Stigma Kashmiri Saffron

Tempe-based Nootropics Depot has launched Safralis, a high-potency supplement derived from cold-milled Mongra-grade Kashmiri saffron. By bypassing traditional extraction methods in favor of whole-stigma processing, the company aims to preserve the full spectrum of bioactives, standardizing the final product to 8% crocins and 3% safranals.

Nootropics Depot Shifts Strategy with Whole-Stigma Kashmiri Saffron

The transition to Safralis marks a departure from the industry-standard extraction model. CEO Paul Eftang argues that extraction inherently sacrifices certain compounds, whereas selecting superior raw material—in this case, rare Mongra-grade saffron from Kashmir—allows for higher native concentrations of beneficial components. To stabilize volatile safranal, the company utilizes a chilled milling process combined with acacia fiber, ensuring the integrity of the stigma remains intact from the farm to the capsule.

Securing this supply chain required establishing direct relationships in the Kashmir valley, a region that produces less than 1% of the global saffron supply. This move addresses long-standing issues with origin opacity and supply volatility in the global trade. Developed alongside scientists at Omnient Labs, Safralis is verified through HPTLC testing and is currently available in 15 mg and 30 mg doses. This approach mirrors the company’s recent development of Erinamax, prioritizing raw material quality over post-harvest concentration to support mood, cognitive function, and neuronal health.
