GlobalFoundries Scales Up Dresden Hub to Lead Physical AI Manufacturing
GlobalFoundries has reached a critical construction milestone at its Dresden facility, celebrating the topping-out of a €1.1 billion expansion project known as SPRINT. The site is now set to become Europe's largest semiconductor foundry, producing over one million 300mm wafers annually by the end of 2028.
GlobalFoundries CEO Tim Breen emphasized that the investment secures a vital supply chain for European industry, ensuring that critical technologies remain accessible and locally manufactured. The project, supported by the European Chips Act and regional funding, is currently on schedule. General Manager Manfred Horstmann noted that the site remains fully operational throughout the construction process, allowing for seamless integration of new cleanroom infrastructure. Pending government approval, the company plans to advance FDX Fusion through the IPCEI Advanced Semiconductor Technologies program.
