Dale Givens Explores Grandparent Estrangement in New Novel

One in five grandparents across the United States faces the quiet trauma of estrangement, a statistic that serves as the foundation for Dale Givens's latest work. In his new novel, 7 Years Lost, the retired military veteran dissects the slow disintegration of family bonds and the struggle to maintain connection.

Dale Givens Explores Grandparent Estrangement in New Novel

The narrative centers on Alex and Darla Griffin, a couple who relocate to the Appalachian Plateau to be near their granddaughter, Elizabeth. What begins as a seemingly idyllic arrangement in their daughter-in-law’s home quickly fractures under the weight of conflicting cultural and religious values. As minor misunderstandings harden into calculated exclusion, the couple finds themselves systematically pushed out of the child’s life.

Givens, a former Army officer and registered nurse, draws from his own observations to depict this painful domestic reality. The story follows the couple over a seven-year span, culminating in a final, sealed letter addressed to Elizabeth for her eighteenth birthday—a vessel for the words they were denied the opportunity to speak. Published by Palmetto Publishing, the book is now available through major retailers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
