Newsom Backs Ballot Measure to Block California Billionaire Tax

California Governor Gavin Newsom has escalated his fight against a proposed wealth tax by endorsing Proposition 42, a measure designed to effectively neutralize the state’s billionaire tax initiative. The move places the governor in direct opposition to labor unions and progressive leaders who argue the proposal protects the ultra-wealthy at the public's expense.

Proposition 42 aims to prohibit any state tax on the ownership of personal property and ban taxes applied retroactively to past financial activities. While Newsom frames the endorsement as a necessary safeguard for Californians' retirement savings, critics label the measure a "poison-pill" tactic. They argue the initiative is a cynical attempt to derail Proposition 40, a separate ballot measure that would impose a 5% tax on billionaires to fund healthcare, food aid, and education.

Debru Carthan of the SEIU-UHW, which is spearheading the campaign for the billionaire tax, accused the governor of prioritizing the interests of the wealthy over the needs of families. The push for Proposition 42 is backed by the group Building a Better California, which counts Google co-founder Sergey Brin among its billionaire donors. The San Francisco Chronicle editorial board recently urged voters to reject the measure, calling it an appalling effort to mask its true purpose with rhetoric about middle-class security.

This endorsement deepens the rift between Newsom and his party’s progressive wing, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Ro Khanna. Khanna recently criticized the governor for aligning with donors like Peter Thiel and Sergey Brin against the interests of labor unions and grassroots Democratic delegates. The debate highlights a growing tension within the party over whether political leaders are prioritizing future national ambitions over the economic policy demands of their own base.
