ISSA Expands Into Pilates as Participation Hits 13.8 Million

With 13.8 million Americans now practicing Pilates, the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) is moving to standardize instruction by launching a new suite of certifications. The organization opened its waitlist Monday for comprehensive Mat and Reformer training programs designed to bridge the gap between niche studio work and commercial fitness.

ISSA Expands Into Pilates as Participation Hits 13.8 Million

As Pilates shifts from boutique studio exclusivity to mainstream gym programming, the demand for qualified instructors has surged. ISSA’s new curriculum, developed alongside master trainer Josh Vela, covers the technical requirements of the classical mat repertoire and the mechanical complexities of the reformer. The portfolio offers three paths: standalone certifications for Mat or Reformer, or a combined bundle for those seeking dual expertise.

This expansion follows a period of growth for the fitness industry, where ISSA certified over 35,000 personal trainers in 2025. According to data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, the Pilates demographic is diversifying, with Gen Z showing the highest participation rates and more than 30% of core users now aged 55 or older. By offering a flexible, online-first certification model, ISSA aims to lower the barrier to entry for prospective instructors looking to capitalize on this shifting market.
