Malou Oheix Wins 2026 Herbie Hancock Institute Jazz Competition in Paris

For the first time in its nearly four-decade history, the Herbie Hancock Institute International Jazz Vocals Competition moved beyond U.S. borders, crowning 27-year-old French singer Malou Oheix as the winner during a star-studded gala at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris this past weekend.

Oheix secured the $50,000 first-place scholarship after impressing an all-star jury that included Dee Dee Bridgewater, Angélique Kidjo, and Gregory Porter. Her performance featured a vulnerable take on "I'm Glad There Is You" alongside a bold, rhythmic interpretation of Michael Brecker's "Madame Toulouse." The competition's final rounds also highlighted the technical precision of runner-up Georgia Heers and third-place finisher Lucy-Anne Daniels, both of whom performed alongside a rhythm section featuring pianist Carmen Staaf, bassist Ben Williams, and drummer Kendrick Scott.

Beyond the competition, the event served as a sprawling tribute to jazz history and architectural legacy. Hosted by Jeremy Irons, the evening honored trumpet icon Arturo Sandoval with the Maria Fisher Founder's Award. Gustavo Dudamel led a poignant homage to architect Frank Gehry, which featured the world premiere of Danilo Pérez’s new composition, "The Ever-Changing World." The gala concluded with a musical tour of Paris’s jazz heritage, including performances by Herbie Hancock and Gregory Porter, bridging the gap between the city’s storied past and the next generation of international vocal talent.
