MIT Targets Amazon in Patent Battle Over Cryptographic Security

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has launched a federal lawsuit against Amazon Web Services, claiming the cloud giant’s infrastructure relies on unauthorized use of university-patented hardware security. The dispute centers on Public Unclonable Function technology, a method for assigning unique digital fingerprints to semiconductor chips.

MIT Targets Amazon in Patent Battle Over Cryptographic Security

The filing in a Massachusetts federal court alleges that AWS infringed on two patents derived from research by MIT professor Srinivas Devadas. At the heart of the conflict is Amazon’s procurement of static random-access-memory PUF technology from Synopsys. While Synopsys is not a named defendant, MIT contends that the use of these components—and potentially those from other third-party suppliers—directly violates its intellectual property rights.

MIT is seeking monetary damages for the alleged infringement. This legal action follows a similar complaint filed by the university against Microsoft in May, which remains active. Amazon has yet to issue a formal response regarding the allegations, and Synopsys has declined to provide comment on the matter.
