The expansion allows the facility to handle up to 147,000 tons of organic material each year, utilizing new infrastructure to accelerate decomposition and meet rising demand across Northern California. This project aligns with state climate objectives aimed at reducing methane emissions, which occur when organic waste breaks down in landfill environments. Currently, nearly half of all material disposed of in California landfills consists of organic waste, including an estimated 2.5 billion meals worth of food annually.

Republic Services Expands California Composting Operations
In an effort to divert organic waste from landfills, Republic Services has completed a major expansion of its composting facility at the Forward Landfill in San Joaquin County. The upgraded site now processes thousands of tons of food scraps and yard waste annually, converting them into nutrient-rich soil for local agriculture.
This initiative was bolstered by a $5.1 million grant from CalRecycle, awarded in 2023 to support construction and equipment costs. Chris Seney, director of Sustainability Innovation in Organics at Republic Services, noted that the site represents a significant leap in scale for regional composting capabilities. The company is simultaneously preparing to launch the San Bernardino Sustainability Park later this year, which is slated to become one of the nation's largest organics recycling hubs with an initial capacity of 300,000 tons per year.
