Sanford Health Adopts Predictive Tech to Manage Rural Ambulatory Care

Sanford Health, the nation’s largest rural health system, is moving away from manual scheduling by adopting TeamBuilder’s predictive platform. The move aims to synchronize staffing and clinical space across 315 locations, shifting the organization from reactive daily management to data-driven, long-term workforce planning for its 60,000 employees.

Managing resources across a sprawling network of 60 hospitals and clinics presents a complex challenge where patient demand and provider availability fluctuate by location. Sanford Health will deploy TeamBuilder to unify these variables, replacing spreadsheet-reliant processes with a centralized system that predicts resource needs. By linking patient demand directly to operational capacity, the health system intends to reduce administrative friction and improve patient access across the upper Midwest.

Erica DeBoer, Chief Nursing Officer at Sanford Health, noted that the organization requires a consistent, data-backed method to align resources with evolving patient needs. The platform will support leaders in making informed decisions ranging from daily staff scheduling to broader hiring strategies. TeamBuilder CEO David Howard described the initiative as a shift toward treating workforce optimization as a core operational strategy rather than a simple scheduling task. The technology, which holds U.S. Patent No. 12,148,523, will be rolled out in a phased regional approach, starting with data integration and governance before moving into full deployment.
