Graphic Novel Series Concludes AAPI History Project

The Asian American Foundation and Third State Books have launched the final installment of the Fighting to Belong! graphic novel series. This concluding volume documents AAPI history from the Vietnam War to the present, aiming to fill significant gaps in American classroom curricula and public knowledge.

Graphic Novel Series Concludes AAPI History Project

Written by Amy Chu and Alexander Chang with illustrations by Louie Chin, the third volume follows middle school protagonists through decades of pivotal events. The narrative covers the targeting of South Asian communities following 9/11 and the surge of anti-Asian sentiment during the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside the stories of figures like Vincent Chin and Balbir Singh Sodhi. The project arrives as TAAF’s 2026 STAATUS Index reveals that over half of U.S. adults cannot identify a single significant moment in Asian American history.

Third State Books, the first general-interest publisher dedicated to AAPI perspectives, emphasizes the medium's capacity to engage young readers with historical events often excluded from textbooks. To support the series in schools, The Asian American Education Project has developed a comprehensive curriculum guide. Additionally, TAAF maintains its AAPI History Hub, which offers educators over 400 lesson plans and interactive tools to integrate these narratives into K-12 classrooms nationwide.
