Facebook introduces natural language controls for feed curation

Facebook is pivoting toward user-driven content curation, launching an AI-powered tool that allows individuals to dictate their feed preferences using natural language. This feature, already deployed on Instagram, marks a departure from rigid black-box algorithms, enabling users to explicitly define the topics they want to see more or less frequently.

The new tool, branded as "Your Algorithm," functions by allowing direct communication between the user and the platform. Instead of relying solely on passive behavioral tracking, the system now prompts users to describe their content interests in their own words. Meta claims these adjustments take effect in real time, shifting the ranking logic based on immediate feedback rather than historical data alone.

Meta has also overhauled the three-dot menu on individual posts to streamline these adjustments. By selecting "Interested" or "Not interested," users trigger follow-up prompts that help the system refine its recommendations. This design mirrors the personalized approach used by streaming services, where content discovery is treated as a collaborative effort between the user and the software.

This rollout follows a series of similar updates across Meta’s ecosystem. Instagram integrated the tool for Reels in December 2025 and expanded it to Feed and Explore this past June. Threads has adopted a parallel system dubbed "Dear Algo," signaling a company-wide strategy to grant users more agency as generative AI becomes the primary engine for content distribution.
