The project centers on the physical manipulation of nanoscale magnetic structures, specifically targeting the ability to control the soft magnetic layer within a device. Principal Investigator Jayasimha Atulasimha will oversee the effort, which incorporates a subaward to Northwestern University to refine thin-film growth and materials characterization. The research team intends to move through quarterly milestones, transitioning from initial material fabrication to the testing of structures roughly 100 nanometers in size.

Rocket One Partners With VCU to Develop Skyrmion-Based AI Memory
Rocket One has launched a one-year research collaboration with Virginia Commonwealth University to advance SKYMRAM, a magnetic memory technology utilizing nanoscale skyrmions. Beginning November 1, 2026, the program aims to establish a proof-of-concept for high-efficiency switching, a critical hurdle for next-generation AI, space, and defense computing architectures.

For Rocket One, this initiative serves as a foundational step in its broader strategy to integrate spintronic and nanomagnetic technologies into AI infrastructure. While the current agreement focuses on experimental feasibility rather than commercial-ready hardware, the company holds an option to negotiate intellectual property licenses resulting from the research. The work represents a long-term play for hardware capable of enduring the unique operational requirements of defense and orbital environments.
