Sao Payment Global Opens Ghana Hub to Anchor West African Expansion

The fintech firm aims to bridge regional financial gaps by deploying a unified digital payment infrastructure across its fifth live market.

Sao Payment Global Opens Ghana Hub to Anchor West African Expansion

The company, originally founded in São Tomé and Príncipe, is moving beyond the standard digital wallet model. Instead, it is constructing a cross-border rail designed to facilitate movement of funds between nations, institutions, and individuals. By integrating Ghana into its network, Sao plans to coordinate regional regulatory efforts and link African payment corridors with Europe, the Gulf, and North America.

At the core of the local offering is the Sao Wallet, which allows users to register via their Ghana Card in roughly two minutes. Beyond individual accounts, the platform provides Group Savings Wallets for communal use and Sao Pay, a QR-based merchant solution. The company has set ambitious inclusion targets for its Ghanaian operations, aiming for 40 percent of its active user base to be women and half of all merchant activations to be women-owned by 2030. To maintain operational trust, Sao has committed to a strict grievance resolution timeline, promising to address disputes within 48 hours while adhering to the Ghana Data Protection Act.
