10,000 Degrees Targets 155,000 Students in Five-Year Expansion Plan

With a mandate to bridge the stark divide in college completion, the non-profit 10,000 Degrees has launched a strategic blueprint for 2027-2031. Backed by a historic $42 million infusion from MacKenzie Scott and Yield Giving, the organization aims to scale its support model to reach 155,000 additional students from low-income backgrounds.

Since its founding in 1981, the San Rafael-based non-profit has supported 92,000 students, with scholars graduating at twice the national average and over 85% finishing debt-free. The new plan seeks to address the persistent education gap where graduation rates for low-income students languish at 14%, compared to 58% for their high-income peers. By 2031, the organization intends to expand its physical footprint into five additional regions while deploying a mix of direct scholarships, career guidance, and predictive technology to bolster student outcomes.

The strategic roadmap prioritizes the integration of artificial intelligence to identify student needs, alongside a push to influence national policy on completion equity. Beyond program delivery, the organization is focusing on diversifying its funding streams and bolstering its endowment to ensure long-term resilience. CEO Kim Mazzuca noted that the initiative leverages decades of internal data to provide the resources and guidance necessary for students to navigate higher education and secure economically mobilizing careers.
